Pima County Sheriff's Department welcomes 29 new deputies | News

Pima County Sheriff’s Department is proud to announce the 2012 class of graduates from their law enforcement academy. 

In a ceremony conducted earlier this morning 30 new recruits (29 deputies and 1 officer for the Sahuarita Police Department) joined the ranks of law enforcement for Pima  County. 

These recruits began their journey some 20 weeks ago, by not only hitting the books to learn about theoretical and practical instruction full time, but participating in defensive tactics, driver’s training, shooting and several other ‘hands-on’ classes as well.

All together the graduates took 14 exams, 18 quizzes, as well as passing a driver’s test and qualifying with their firearms.  They also had to combat physical assailants and pass two different sets of fitness assessments.  As a last step to graduation, the recruits had to pass a comprehensive final exam that is administered by the Arizona Peace Officer Standard and Training Board.

These new deputies have backgrounds ranging from former military service to a former pastor, and their ages run from as young as 21 years old to the oldest at 46.  They all deserve congratulations as they begin their law enforcement careers.  Each new deputy will go on after graduation to receive additional agency-specific instruction, and then advance on to field training, which is a 12 week long program.
