Desert View senior receives 2012 Community Leader Award

A Desert View High School senior has been named as the Sunnyside Alumni Association's Learning Community Leader award winner.

Timothy Crain, a future Air Force Academy student, has been rewarded for his leadership abilities and service to his community.

He will receive the award at the seventh annual Alumni Association Dollars for Scholars Scholarship Reception on April 25, 5:30 p.m. at Desert View High School. Speaking at the event will be Governing Board member Daniel Hernandez Jr., who received the Learning Community Leader Award in 2011.

Tim is not only a long time member of Desert View's Air Force (JROTC), he is one of 1,200 nationwide appointees to the Air Force Academy.  He has been a Sunnyside District student since kindergarten starting at Gallego Basic Elementary School and Billy Lane Lauffer Middle School. He has a 4.326 GPA and is seventh in his graduating class.

As a member of Desert View’s Air Force JROTC throughout his entire high school career, Tim has held every commander role possible. He has been involved in community activities such as food drives, toy drives, and participating in the Tucson Rodeo. As a member of the National Honor Society, he has volunteered his time Christmas caroling, assisting with school blood drives and working to improve the school’s environment during Make A Difference Day.

Tim actively participates in his church youth group and in Tucson’s annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. He also represents his Sunnyside community by being a student athlete; he currently plays tennis and has also been in swimming.

Being accepted into the Air Force Academy represents the achievement of a lifetime goal for Tim. He'd like to become a pilot one day.
