Give your kids the chance to 'Explore music and sound'

The Tucson Federation of Musicians, Local 33, will soon be host the first ever Youth Music Fair with the theme of 'Exploring Music & Sound.'

WHEN:  May 12 from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

WHERE:  Tucson Symphony Center (2175 N. 6th Avenue, Tucson)

COST:  Free to the public

Everyone is invited to attend this first time event.  The highlight, or centerpiece of the event will be the Instrument Petting Zoo, where children of all ages can explore a wide range of instruments like the tuba, trombone, steel drums, cello, electric guitar and many instruments, too many to name all at once.  The 'zoo keepers' for this petting zoo will be professional musicians with a working knowledge of the instruments and will be able to answer any questions the kids might have.

“Our union musicians are excited to be hosting this event for the Tucson community,” says Local 33 President Johanna Lundy. “We’re looking forward to sharing our unique musical assets and providing a fun afternoon that celebrates creativity. Especially in this time when many music and arts programs are being cut from schools, we want to offer kids the opportunity to explore and experience the joy of music."

Children, who already own and play an instrument, are encouraged to bring their instruments and to take part in a mini-master class for strings, winds, brass and percussion.  This would be the perfect time to ask for advice, get playing tips, or maybe even find a teacher to help.

Also on hand will be the opportunity for the kids to make their own instruments, to experiment with 'found sounds' and composition, and to attend music and movement classes.  They will also get the chance to experience a live musical performance and win door prizes and enjoy free refreshments all at the same time.

The Tucson Community Music Fair will be an occasion for all members of the city’s musical community to showcase their organizations and services-with youth music programs, music teachers, and local music shops available at the event.

The Tucson Youth Music Fair is sponsored by the Tucson Federation of Musicians, Tucson Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Music Store, Coyote Music Together, Eegee’s, Instrumental Music Center, MetroGnome Music, Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus, Tucson Junior Strings, and Zoran’s Violin Shop.
